Troop 206 Makes an Impact at Sweep the Hooch

On a crisp spring morning in North Fulton, Troop 206 of Roswell, Georgia—based at Zion Church—joined hundreds of volunteers for one of the region’s most meaningful environmental service events: Sweep the Hooch.

Hosted annually by Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, Sweep the Hooch is a watershed-wide cleanup effort that mobilizes volunteers across dozens of sites along the Chattahoochee River and its tributaries. Each year, participants gather to remove trash, protect wildlife habitats, and preserve one of Georgia’s most vital natural resources.

Service in Action Along the River

This year, Troop 206 focused their efforts near the Riverside area, rolling up their sleeves to tackle litter along the riverbanks and surrounding trails. Equipped with gloves, trash bags, and a strong sense of purpose, Scouts worked side-by-side—collecting debris, clearing invasive waste, and restoring the natural beauty of the Chattahoochee.

Sweep the Hooch is not just a cleanup—it’s hands-on environmental stewardship. Volunteers often walk, wade into shallow waters, or even paddle sections of the river to reach areas where trash accumulates most.

For Troop 206, this meant getting directly into the environment they were working to protect—an experience that transforms service from a requirement into a mission.

Building Leaders Through Service

Participation in events like Sweep the Hooch aligns directly with the core values of Scouting: leadership, responsibility, and community impact. For the Scouts of Troop 206, the day wasn’t just about picking up trash—it was about understanding their role as caretakers of the environment.

The Chattahoochee River is more than a scenic backdrop—it supplies drinking water, supports wildlife, and provides recreation for millions across Georgia. Efforts like Sweep the Hooch help combat pollution that threatens these ecosystems, including harmful litter and microplastics.

By contributing to this effort, Troop 206 played a tangible role in protecting a resource that their own community depends on daily.

A Community United for Impact

One of the most powerful aspects of Sweep the Hooch is the collective impact. Across more than 60 cleanup sites, over a thousand volunteers come together each year, removing tons of trash in just a few hours.

Troop 206 stood among these volunteers—part of a larger movement of families, organizations, and local leaders committed to preserving Georgia’s waterways.

More Than a Cleanup

For Troop 206, the day was about more than service hours. It was about:

  • Learning environmental responsibility firsthand
  • Strengthening teamwork and leadership skills
  • Giving back to the Roswell community
  • Leaving a visible, lasting impact

And perhaps most importantly, it was about understanding that small actions—like picking up a single piece of trash—scale into meaningful change when a community shows up together.

Looking Ahead

As Sweep the Hooch continues to grow each year, so does its impact—and so does the opportunity for groups like Troop 206 to lead by example.

The Scouts didn’t just clean up the river—they helped protect the future of it.

And that’s leadership in action.
